Summary
An introduction to a couple of new tools we have made available to support testing the Lucid Protocol: the Lucid Test Runner and the Lucid Broker
To help in testing the Lucid Protocol, we have made available a few new tools. A Lucid test broker and a test runner. This article explains what they are and how you can get access.
We have provisioned a test MQTT broker on the internet for use by those testing the Lucid Protocol. The new broker can act as the MQTT broker between various test Field Devices (FDs) and Supervisory Applications (SAs). There is no requirement to use it at all and developers may choose to use all their own facilities, however, it is avialable and proved useful in the recent WITS-DNP3 and Lucid Plugfest in May 2026.
We have also provisioned a test runner. The test runner is a website which allows logged in users to enter details of the FD they would like to test and run the current Lucid tests against that FD. The test runner keeps a record of what tests have been run and their success, it provides an easy method for both users and vendors to run Lucid tests against an FD. The Lucid tests relate to the tetser project which Lucid maintain, a Python and pytest project which runs a series of tests against an FD through a broker. This project is jointly developed and maintained by WITS members working on Lucid.
The Lucid Protocol development is financed and controlled by WITS. Membership of WITS gives full access to the Lucid tests, test broker and test runner. Membership also allows an organisation to play a part in the continued development of the protocols managed by WITS and the tools used alongside the protocols. To gain access to the tools mentioned in this article, please become a member of WITS, you can find details on how to do that here.
Of course, to develop with Lucid you do not require the tools above, just the protocol specification, which is freely available from this website. Whichever path you pick, enjoy developing and using the protocol.
